This is the time of year I miss teaching First Grade. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE third! But I do miss Polar Express Day, Celebrations around the World, and Grinch Day. This year with snow days and testing, we did very few holiday activities. Students did get to participate in math and literacy stations.
We did celebrate the holidays with our annual Holiday Party. Thank you to our WONDERFUL third grade parents for making our holiday parties so meaningful!

Hello?...Hello?...Is this thing on?
Well hello there! Long time no see. We have been busy, busy here in third. I just have not gotten around to posting things. Honestly, we've been so busy I haven't even taken that many photos! You know how it is. "I'll do it tomorrow." And then you blink and it's four months later! I am hoping to post much more in the new year, but I am not making any promises :).
One event that I did take photos was our Veterans' Day Assembly held November 11th. It was so heartwarming. Each grade level sang a patriotic song and every veteran there was recognized. Take a look!

The Third Grades sang a beautiful song to our veterans that moved us to tears! Here's a short clip.

How to Dig a Hole to the Other Side of the World
What do you think? Could we dig a hole to the other side of the world? This is the question that was posed to students as our first science unit began. We read the book of the same title. After our discussion we went on a treasure hunt looking for the Earth's treasures of soil, rock, sand, water, and air. Check us out as we work as scientists to explore the earth around us.

We are SUPER READERS!
Welcome to the 2013 school year! I am Mrs. Langston and I teach Language Arts to our third grade students. We have had an exciting start as we begin to explore our literate lives and learn what "real reading" looks and sounds like. Here's a peek of what we have been up to the last few weeks.
Where do readers read? What do readers read?
Real Reading vs. Fake Reading. We are SUPER READERS! We will...
Read with Expression
Use strategies to decode unfamiliar words
Make Connections
Use text to support our thinking
Challenge ourselves
Pause at Periods...and much more.
This lesson came from Hope King.
We are now learning about metacognition. This is all helping us prepare for our first unit of our Language Arts program. I am counting down to the big reveal!

Everyone Needs A Buddy
Last Saturday was a special day for one of our Third Grade Friends. With permission from her family, we are excited to share the special day with you.
The Buddy Walk of Cincinnati supports the National Down Syndrome Society and helps raise funds for research and education. The Third Grade Team was proud to support our friend and this important cause. Students donated money throughout the week and on the most beautiful Saturday, we gathered at Sawyer Point to support Team Elizabeth.
Team Elizabeth raised $725!! Thanks for your support! If you still want to donate, please click on the photo below.

Throwback Thursday
This week I am featuring a flashback from Mrs. Weiler's blog, Far-Out First Graders. Mrs. Weiler began her blog with this class of third graders. Since many of them will part of our third grade community, I thought it would be fun to look back at them two years ago. Mrs. Weiler was more than happy to help out!
